Housing Modules: Established a number of low cost housing modules (typologies): Long house (under construction), Square house, Pyramid (tent) house, Mini-house (built) and Barn house (in design). These modules embrace number of design goals: efficiency of space, build-ability, some prefabrication, capable of "up or down specification", cost adaptability, suitable to different terrains, climates and urban or rural environments. The tent house is designed as a prefabricated self-permanent kit humanitarian shelter (adaptable "skins") and also a place of refuge form harsh environment's and climatic change. It can be "closed down" for extreme climatic conditions.
Established an architectural practice: Key Areas include: Managing team and hiring staff, implementing areas of accounting, marketing and systems management. Day to day operations and design and delivery of a number of projects from start to finish. Namely: brief, concept, design, consultant management, contract documentation, tendering and administration.
Environmental assessor for the Januburu Housing Estate, Broome, WA ($140M+): On behalf of Land-corp (WA Government) and Engawa Architects, this role involved the energy efficiency assessment of residential housing estates. It involved two steps; first, an initial option for owners of the allotments to receive feedback on their draft designs and second, the certification of the plans in accordance with the estate Guidelines. This regulatory role oversaw all applications for the development of the 35Ha’s of housing estate, comprising 335 housing lots and numerous group-housing allotments. This role allowed me to overview numerous housing models and strategies and give feedback to the design and building industry.
Project architect for Luurnpa Trade Training Centre, Senior School Campus, Balgo Hills, WA ($3.0M): Located on the edge of the Great Sandy and Tanami Desert at Balgo Hills, this project entailed the conversion and extension of unlisted historically significant buildings to create a senior school campus. The brief and site conditions presented a number of design challenges, integrating an expansive range of programs within a limited budget. It involved heritage renovations, new buildings and building extensions. The tender stage required negotiating with the lowest tenderor to re-quote certain trades so as enable this vital project to continue with its project intention. Despite the remoteness and complexity of this program the project was completed to budget. The project has created a senior school / trade campus for the (most likely) last indigenous peoples that have ventured from the desert heart.
Project design team and project coordinator for private residence, Pearl Beach, NSW ($1.0M): Whilst this work remains not built it represents a rigorous case study in design methodology and architectural thinking. This work was situated on a flood-able creek site. As such, a long-term vision relating to unforeseen climatic conditions was integrated into the flexible design. The design was influenced by a Japanese grid strategy and many of the ideas and approaches have been directly passed down from mentors. The structure was designed with no wastage (off cuts) and the sheeting and primary and secondary structures recyclable and adaptable for future alteration. Whilst the dwelling was able to sleep and support up to two families as well as a working environment, the indoor area is spatial yet still with a relatively restrained internal floor area. The indoor and outdoor spaces were equally allocated to encourage a way of life aligned with the environment. The form also considered more abstract notions of emptiness and significance whilst creating a construction builder-friendly structure.
Project design team for Glenayr Terraces, Bondi Beach, Sydney, NSW ($4.0M): Winner of the 2004 RAIA Gold Medal, Francis Greenway Society Green Building Award. Working intensively with Tone Wheeler, the Principal Director this cost effective and sustainable multi-residential terrace represented the application of a body of ESD principles and knowledge including strategies for effective and efficient build-ability.
Project Illustrator for 3D presentation for self sufficient residence, Tanja, NSW ($1.0M): Winner of the 2003 RAIA NSW Architecture Environment Award. This is an off-grid self-sufficient home / work dwelling, environmentally-design driven integrating eatable gardens, water and solar harvest, grey water recycling and passive heating and cooling strategies.
